Sculptures to wear Recent exhibits Shadow (hai-ku) About Sabrina Contact info Home
| - What does takı, "made to wear", mean to you? "Takı" is a modern jewellery term which means "made to wear". This term fits very well its notion in Turkish. Not jewellery, but takı; not valuable for its material value but for what it means; a symbol that takes its value from the thoughts of its designer and from the choice of the one who wants to wear it. It is a sign, a gesture as personal as a wink or a smile, in the simplistic lifestyle and dresscode of the modern woman. - Sabrina Fresko. Until now, we knew you as an architect and interior designer. How did you start designing jewellery? I perceive design as a complete entity. Based on an education in the foundations and basic fundamentals of design, it should be possible to create a house, a chair, a vase, or a jewel, as long as you are familiar with the material you work with and do a thorough research no matter how simple your subject may seem. That was the most important principle I learned during my studies in architecture. In my professional life, I worked on interior design alongside architecture. The will to realize my designs as I was drawing them made me work with all sorts of craftsmen. The curiosity to know all sorts of materials led me to work with ceramics, sculpture, and then I discovered the metals. I think in jewellery, I found a new way of expressing myself. I was surprised to find out that as I was working, the subject I was focused on was imposing itself. This subject was the states of a woman, a lonely, multiplied, dancing, diminishing and disappearing woman. I see my work as wearable sculptures that symbolize the relationship of a woman with time and nature. In some of them, I use natural semi-precious stones, even beach stones that have been rolled, shaped and polished by the sea with the patience of the centuries. I think that even the thought of the adventure of those stones on earth gives energy and strength to people. Things are as valuable as we think they are. The times those stones have witnessed before they were put on a ring, necklace or brooch seems very exciting to me. - How do your works reach people, do you exibit them? I participated in three joint exhibitions in the past three years. My most recent works, "wearable sculptures" has a conceptual unity. I am planning to exhibit them in the right time and place when I exhaust the topic. I am also planning to start a workshop for people who want to learn and work on designing jewellery. This will involve an experimental and liberal approach, aiming to bring out the personal expressive styles, using every material you can think of, paper, fabric, beeswax, silver and all sorts of metals. I believe every human has a creative capacity. It only needs to be stirred. Interview by Işıl Güçlü, September 2001, Schering Culture and Art Magazine. |
